In a landmark moment during the Emirati-Kuwaiti joint productive families’ exhibition at Dubai Mall, under the auspices of The UAE Ministry of Community Development, The Ministry of Community Development, in the distinguished presence of Her Excellency Hessa Bint Essa Buhumaid, Minister of Community Development, and His Excellency Saad Ibrahim Al Kharaz, Minister of Social Affairs in Kuwait, proudly unveiled the UAE’s inaugural Blockchain payment gateway. This transformative achievement was realized through a dynamic partnership with Dubai Blockchain Center (DBC).
Dr. Marwan Alzarouni, CEO of Dubai Blockchain Center, elaborated on this groundbreaking initiative in a phone interview with UNLOCK. He explained, “In close collaboration with our esteemed partners, we have developed an innovative point-of-sale solution capable of accepting cryptocurrency payments for the acquisition of traditional artisanal and handmade products crafted by productive families in the UAE. These products, available for purchase through cryptocurrencies, encompass a wide array of traditional and innovative items, ranging from publications and children’s clothing to jalabias, abayas, perfumes, dukhoon, decorative pots, Emirati spices, honey, natural oils, and delectable desserts. These innovative products seamlessly bridge the past and present.” Dr. Alzarouni further emphasized that while payments can be made in cryptocurrencies, the families responsible for these exceptional products will receive their payment in UAE Dirhams.
This historic milestone marks the first instance in the UAE where a payment gateway has embraced cryptocurrencies, setting a precedent for technological innovation in the country. The Ministry of Community Development proudly assumes the distinction of being the first government department to harness the capabilities of a blockchain payment gateway.
